Email

Send me an email containing the following information:

  1. Your name, what you go by, and how to pronounce it.
  2. Your CS account name
  3. Where you are from
  4. Why you are taking this class and what your goals are for it
  5. If you are part of a performance group, sports team, etc.
  6. A picture of yourself (to help me put a face to your name)
  7. Something interesting about yourself that you'd like to share with me

Assignment

Submit written answers to the following questions at the start of class. Be sure to include the requisite honor code statement.

Question 1

Give 2 examples of how each component of the CIA model of security affects your daily life. Give 1 example of each in the "-AA" portions. Clearly explain how these components are involved in such a way that demonstrates you understand the meanings. (I.e., don't just say "riding my bike gives me endurance" without explaining how.)

Question 2

You have been tasked with writing software that will allow students in CS classes to submit their programming assignments for a class. This software will run on the CS web server and all classes will be using it. It needs to support:

Identify at least 5 security threats that you need to be concerned with and describe the sort of control that could be used to mitigate the risk or address the threat.

If you make additional assumptions about design requirements or the operating environment, please list them.

Question 3

[Pfleeger 1.21] Unfortunately, security failures are quite common, and are often newsworthy. Find a recent news article (from 2006) about such an event and explain which of the various principles were violated and how. (Easiest penetration, adequate protection, effectiveness, weakest link)
