2014 ACM Regional Programming Contest

November 11th, 2014

The Oberlin College programming contest teams had a strong showing at the regional ACM meet this weekend. There were over 140 teams, including many from powerhouses such as Carnegie Mellon University and University of Waterloo. Our top team, “Megahurts”, came in 15th overall, which placed Oberlin as the second highest ranking school at the Youngstown site (the largest of the four regional sites).

Our competitors were Nathan Paige, Nathan Klein, Laura Watiker, Evan Hertafeld, Scott Hulver, Sam Rossin, Alex Cotsarelis, Eren Guendelsberger, Chris Egerton, Amanda Strominger, Devon Wells, and Tim Hennigan.

Congratulations on a great performance! Next up is the Denison contest in the Spring.

Winter Term Meeting on Tuesday Oct. 28 at 4:30 in King 235

The purpose of this is to allow people to come together to talk about what they would like to do for WT and to see if any group projects coalesce. This is an opportunity to see if there are any common interests that might benefit from a group project.

We’ve done this the past few years and among other things the Prestissimo project emerged from it.   What will this year bring?

April 9th, 2014

Join us on Friday, April 9 for a 12-1pm talk by Beenish Chaudhry entitled: “Putting Healthcare in Your Hands” in King 235.

Abstract: Our healthcare system is undergoing a seismic shift that is breaking the old information asymmetry – where doctors had all the information and patients had very little – now technology is being used to collect data to give patients an easy way to access key facts and gain knowledge for decisions about health. While we know how to target this information for the affluent and their lifestyles, what are we doing for those with low socioeconomic background? In this talk, you will learn about technology design challenges and solutions for this population, and what needs to be done in the future.
