CSCI 100 - Homework 3Graphics!

Due before midnight, Thursday 01 Mar 2007

In this assignment, you'll be creating a number of graphical image files and putting them on a web page.

I'll be adding more step-by-step instructions to this page, but most everything was covered in class.

Part 1 - Making folders

Make a folder called hw03. Inside that folder make a subfolder called images (no pages since there is just one HTML file).

Part 2 - Making graphics

You'll get a chance to try your hand at making graphic files and using them on a web page. There are various image editing software in the computer labs, and you can always download and use the open source tool The GIMP on your personal computer (it is also installed throughout campus).

Unless otherwise specified, all images go in the images directory.

User icons

Create 2 user icons with animated GIFs. Each must be between 100x100 and 200x200 pixels in size, square, and consist of at least 3 frames each.

Transparent GIF

Make a transparent GIF containing your name and a simple logo.

Banner graphic

Create 2 banner graphics (468x60 pixels) one for "The Internet and Beyond!" and one for an Oberlin department or program -- real or fictional.

Part 3 - Making pages

index.html

Create a page called index.html in the hw03 directory that contains your user icons, transparent GIF, and banner graphics. With each, include a brief description of the graphic. Have the banners be clickable links to the CSCI 100 home page and an official Oberlin website.

Honor Code

If you followed the Honor Code in this assignment, insert a paragraph attesting to the fact within this file as well.

I affirm that I have adhered to the Honor Code in this assignment.

Update index.html

Update your index.html file in your csci100 directory with a link to this assignment.

Part 4 - handin

Upload your hw03 folder to your CS account and verify that your pages and images can be viewed online. You will also need to electronically submit your files to me as you should have done in the last assignment.

  1. either ssh into cs.oberlin.edu or start a terminal from a lab machine
  2. cd ~/www/csci100
  3. handin -c cs100 -a 3 hw03

Woohoo! Pretty, pretty pictures are a big step towards pretty, pretty webpages.
