Part One - The Text Document

Section: Laboratory Assignment
...Subsection: Part One - The Text Document

Use a simple text editor to create a document. Your instructor lab instructor will tell you which editor or editors is available on the system in your lab. She will NOT tell you exactly how to get to it. That is part of the exercise. You need to locate and start the editor, and write a simple document that contains the following features:

  1. Your name
  2. Today's date
  3. Which course/section you are in
  4. The first names of five classmates, in the order they are sitting. (If you are not in the class, give the first names of five friends or family members.)
  5. A short paragraph describing what kind of background you have in typing and word processing. Use complete sentences and appropriate grammar and punctuation!
  6. Another short paragraph (at least five lines) telling something interesting about you. It is not true and not acceptable to say there is nothing interesting about yourself! (Again, follow the rules of grammar to the best of your ability)
  7. Make a copy of your classmate's names from the beginning of the document.
  8. Paste a new copy of the names at the end of the document. The original set of names should still be there!
  9. Use cut and paste commands to sort the second set of names in alphabetical order. DO NOT simply retype the names in order. The purpose of this exercise is to give you experience using these ideas. Later on, we will expect you to be comfortable cutting and pasting. This is your chance to make sure you understand these concepts.
  10. Save your document. Your lab instructor may have special instructions for you on where to save the document.
  11. Print out your document.
  12. Hand in your document to the lab instructor.
